How My Hip Injury Forced Me to Rebuild from the Ground Up

After my hip injury, I thought the pain would end my ability to move well, let alone train like an athlete. What I didn’t realize at the time was this: the issue wasn’t just my hip—it was my feet.

When your hip doesn’t move correctly, energy doesn’t transfer down the chain the way it should. Instead of clean flow from hip → knee → ankle → foot, you start leaking energy. And that leak usually shows up at the end of the chain: your big toe.

If the big toe isn’t working, every step, every squat, every stride feels weaker than it should.


Why the Big Toe Is More Important Than You Think

Most lifters think about squats, presses, and deadlifts—not their big toe. But your big toe is one of the most underrated tools in your body.

  • Energy Transfer: It’s the final push off in every step, jump, or sprint.

  • Hip & Spine Connection: Poor push off forces compensation up the chain—hips lock, knees absorb too much load, and the spine torques.

  • Balance & Stability: The big toe stabilizes when you cut, pivot, or shift weight.

  • Longevity: A weak big toe sets you up for chronic issues in the feet, ankles, and hips.

In short: if you want to move well, you need a strong big toe.


End-Chain Energy and the Double Trouble Effect

Movement works in chains. If one link fails, the others adapt. A hip injury changes how you load the ground. That overloads the foot, especially the big toe.

When the foot fails, stress bounces right back into the hip. That’s double trouble. The hip worsens the foot, the foot worsens the hip, and you stay stuck.

The only way out is to retrain the end chain. That means teaching your body to finish each step with proper big toe push off.

One of my go-to drills is the big toe push off with a wedge. Elevating the forefoot forces you to finish through the big toe. There’s no escape route—your body has to relearn proper push off mechanics.
